In Rapid City, SD, nestled at the base of Mt. Rushmore Road is home to a quaint typical family motel. The Lazy U, built in the 1950s, has a charm that attracts guests year after year. Lately celebrating its 70th Anniversary, the restored hotel is as fresh as its opening day.
Verlyn and Cindy Bourne have owned and maintained the motel for the past fifteen years. One of the last Mom & Pop’s in Black Hills, The Lazy U is a real treat. They gave the little motel a charm that is rare in today’s unfortunate world. Parked in front, a 1954 Chevy truck greets you, complete with the The Lazy U logo. Cindy’s grandfather got the brand new one and learned to drive in it. You can find Cindy taking her to the farmers market or on a trip to the food bottle. Restored from a former farm truck to The Lazy The Mascot, the Bournes are always happy to use it for photo backgrounds.
Transported on time entering the lobby. You will find reasonable prices and friendly faces. A personal greeting awaits you from the family itself – Cindy, Verlyn or Cindy’s cousin, Jackie. Travelers can enjoy a cool drink and a lively conversation and a pile of cards and brochures. After check-in, you receive a real key with a blue-bright-blue key fob. Bourne and their family members enjoy making your stay more enjoyable.
You feel right at home and part of the family. It offers bright rooms, free Wi-Fi, a flat-screen TV and parking in front of the room. Verlyn, the Routemaster, or one of her undertudies will be happy to focus your day trips. Bike tours or visit the many beautiful sites and attractions in The Black Hills. Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse are just the beginning of your Black Hills adventure. After a long day of adventure, we returned home to a cool, clean room.
Enjoy the most comfortable sleep at night that one can expect outside of home. The beds, fresh and often changed for new sets of pillows, will leave you wanting to sleep. Clean little clothes and soft towels will help you feel comfortable. Hairdryers are available in the front office but you must bring your own shampoo. The family abandons expensive toilets for low-cost accommodation.
This little gem from the past will make you plan your next visit before check-out. You will go home well rested and full of loving memories. When you leave I understand why people come back year after year to the enchanting Lazy The Motel.
